Java vs. JavaScript for recruiters

There are these jokes among developers that recruiters don’t even know there’s a difference between Java and JavaScript.

There are these jokes among developers that recruiters don’t even know there’s a difference between Java and JavaScript.

But hey, we are not laughing (anymore). Instead, we’ve set up online training—Geekruiter—to teach them what the differences are, what frameworks are obsolete and which ones are trendy.

Make sure y’all know the difference between:

  1. Java for backend
  2. Java for mobile apps (Android)
  3. JavaScript for both frontend and backend

Java for Backend

Some developers focus only on backend: JSE (Java Standard Edition) and J2EE (Java Enterprise Edition). Mostly, they use Spring or Hibernate frameworks.

Java for Android

It’s very different than programming J2EE as Android has lots of specifics. You shouldn’t assume any Java backend developer can also do Android apps. In fact, this is what irritates developers frequently. ⚠️

JavaScript

Historically, JavaScript was used on frontend websites (without any framework, and JQquery). A few years ago, Node.js brought JavaScript to backend, too.

In addition, JavaScript is used on:

  1. frontend website: React, Vue.js, Angular frameworks
  2. frontend apps: React Native (or rather old-school Titanium, PhoneGap, Ionic)
